Luckily over our several years of petsitting, we never had a pet emergency situation, until recently. We just experienced our first trip to the vet on a housesitting assignment. And before we say more, fortunately, Yoda is doing just fine.
We noticed what appeared to be a scratch in her eye. She was behaving normally otherwise and didn't seem in pain, but it can be difficult to tell whether cats are not feeling well. The other kitty can be rough with her, so we thought he scratched her eye.
We immediately got in touch with the vet and they told us to come in to the next available appointment that day. Contacted the pet parents to double check if it's okay as well. So we quickly arranged transport with a neighbor, and grabbed her carrying case, diaper pad, wipes, treats, vaccine card, and off we went!
The scratch seemed to have diminished or almost disappeared later in the day, but came back again - perhaps it might have been debris or dust after all, or the angle of the lighting. It really looked like a distinct cornea scratch. We wanted to be 100% safe though just in case. A scratch in the eye can be serious and immediate attention is crucial.
Yoda does not travel well and gets really stressed, so we did our best to make her comfortable. The vet visit went okay and we are continuing to monitor and give her eye drops 3x a day, which she hates, but she is being a champ through!
Yes, cats are quite independent and on short spurts, it is likely okay to have a neighbor come in daily for food and litter box cleans. On longer trips, however, having a live-in housesitter is ideal in case of emergencies. Plus, they can get spoiled with chin scratches and brushing!
Yoda seems to be doing fine now thankfully and we are communicating with the pet parents as we don't want them to worry on their trip either.
